Who taught them words? Did they pick them up back when they were just flowers? Because if so, that would explain their limited vocabulary.

Hmm... What an interesting reply. Prehaps as flowers they were in some sort of wizard garden, and an experiment gone wack made the humanoid. Wizards are the only people who I can think of that would say things like humanoid often enough for them to pick up on it
